What are those black streaks on my roof? You may think it’s caused from dirt or soot from your chimney, but it’s actually algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It’s not preventable, but can be cleaned and removed for a period of time. This type of algae feeds on limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Some newer shingles are manufactured with a copper granules which prevent algae from forming.
